Families report that two experiences are particularly supportive and helpful as they parent a child who is deaf or hard of hearing (DHH): 1) Meeting other families who have raised or are raising children who are DHH, and 2) Meeting adults and young people who are DHH. Both opportunities can provide families with helpful perspectives from those who have “lived” similar journeys. Other families often have helpful experiences to share and know what it is like to parent a child who is DHH. Individuals who are DHH can help families understand what it means to be deaf or hard of hearing. In the two sections below, individual stories and quotes are shared in an effort to provide support to families like yours. The stories included were originally contributed to a team that created a website for families focused on “raising deaf kids” (see About Us). In these stories, you will find perspectives from a variety of families and individuals who are DHH.
